Job description
**Mathematics Teacher and Residential Educator**<br><br>Mathematics teacher for a small, international, residential winter-term program for students aged 12-14 in the Bernese Oberland from January through March 2027.<br><br>In addition to teaching mathematics and providing French tutorials, the successful candidate will serve as a mentor, residential advisor, and academic advisor, providing guidance and feedback on students’ written work and supporting their personal and social development. Faculty also advise and mentor students in the preparation of The Swiss Report, a central interdisciplinary research and writing project within the program. Strong knowledge of Switzerland, including Swiss history, Swiss geography, and European history, is highly desirable.<br><br>This is a fully residential position. The successful candidate will reside in the boys’ dormitory and participate fully in school life. Duties include pastoral supervision; taking meals with students and assuming supervisory responsibilities during mealtimes; evening, weekend, and overnight responsibilities; leadership of student and outdoor activities; supervision of student chores and routines; and accompaniment of all field trips and excursions as a chaperone.<br><br>Faculty lead and participate in routine student duties, including kitchen clean-up, bathroom cleaning, vacuuming, and general upkeep of shared spaces. Faculty also work in the kitchen, including leading student dish crews and helping students prepare breakfasts and Sunday brunch. Accommodation is provided within the boys’ dormitory and involves shared living facilities.<br><br>The program operates under a strict no-cell-phone and no-internet policy for students. The educational program is intentionally low-tech and relies primarily on books, paper, discussion, and direct human interaction rather than digital devices. Faculty are expected to embrace and model this culture. Faculty are expected to maintain an active and visible presence throughout the day and evening and to engage with students in both structured and informal settings.<br><br>The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about immersive residential education and comfortable working in an educational environment that emphasizes structure, character formation, respect, personal responsibility, and active participation in residential community life. A mature, grounded presence, a high degree of independence and responsibility, and an ability to build positive relationships with adolescents while maintaining clear boundaries are essential.<br><br>Experience in boarding schools, residential education, summer camps, outdoor education programs, or other immersive youth programs is strongly preferred. Familiarity with the U.S. education system is highly desirable, as the vast majority of our students are American and attend schools in the United States. This background supports communication with families and sending schools and facilitates understanding of students’ academic expectations and educational experiences. Familiarity with the academic, social, and developmental needs of early adolescents is essential.
